POSCO ICT announced on April 16 that it will participate in the South Saad Al Abdullah New City project in Kuwait, which is considered the first Korean smart city export model. In smart city, the information communications technology (ICT) systems, such as the Internet of Things, big data and artificial intelligence, are applied to main functions that comprise a city, like transportation, energy and building, improving convenience of life and efficiency of city management.

The South Saad Al-Abdullah New City is located 30 kilometers to the west of Kuwait City, the capital of Kuwait. The new city will be established on a 66.4 square kilometer site, nearly three times as large as Bundang in South Korea. A total of 4.4 trillion won (US$3.85 billion) will be injected from designing to construction. POSCO ICT will form a Korean consortium with Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), and design ICT infrastructure for the smart city, including city management center, until June next year.

The smart city project is pushed ahead by POSCO at a group level. POSCO ICT has operated “smart solution council (SCC)” in cooperation with POSCO, POSCO Engineering & Construction and POSCO Energy from 2015, making efforts to secure technologies and solutions in the smart city, smart factory and smart energy sectors.
