Another people friendly move from the Modi-led government has created a huge uproar in the markets. The Union government is all set to pay the rent of the urban poor through a welfare scheme to be rolled out in 100 smart cities. The government will very soon be unravelling a different housing policy with the rent vouchers for people who fall in the BPL (below poverty line) category. The government will shell out around Rs 2713 crore annually to turn this project into a reality. Experts believe that this project will immensely impact the lives of the millions of urban poor and migrating population. Under the scheme, urban local bodies would distribute rent vouchers to the targeted population of urban poor. The land owner would receive a voucher from the tenant which they can redeem from any citizen service bureau.
